Local fishermen in the Greater Accra region has called on stakeholders to support the government in the one-month an on fishing initiative undertaken by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aqua Culture.
This move, according to some fishermen will help sanitize the fishing industry as well as address illegal fishing
menace in the country.
At a recent press conference, spokesperson of the group, Nii Clottey, said the Fishermen are not in support of the stand of the minority in Parliament to demonstrate against the ban, rather, they are on fully on the side of the government on the issue.
He said, the move will help address all the illegality and inappropriate fishing methods in the industry and also promote fishing practices.
“We are totally against the minority in Parliament’s decision to embark on demonstration against government’s closure of the sea decision.
“We rather give our full support to government to embark on the closure, which we think, will help sanitize the system,” he stated.
Nii Clottey stated that for over 20 years, fisherfolks have never received any support previous governments in addressing their concerns and that it is only this current government that has shown some concern and so they would rather rally behind the current government for better results.
He therefore called on the government to use the state security agencies like the Police and the army to safeguard the territorial waters of the country during the ban so as to cause the arrest and prosecution of all those who would flaunt the law.
