Women of Hope, a nongovernmental organization has called on the minority Members of Parliament (MPs) to render an unqualified apology to the newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, Lydia Seyram Alhassan for calling her “bloody widow”.
The visibly angry women said the apology will serve as a sign of respect to all widows and women in politics in Ghana.
President of the NGO, Winifred Asiedu, who addressed journalists in Accra expressed disgust at the “bloody widow” comment by the Minority MPs as inscribed on their placards on the day the new MP was sworn into office.
“It’s much uncalled for, calling her bloody widow and using placards, shouting at her and walking out is very bad, which must be condemned seriously,” she lamented.
She cited one NDC MP Woman who was also elected as MP when the husband died and so, such unprintable comments must not be allowed since it can happen to any woman.
Madam Asiedu explained that, as men in Parliament, the organization expect them to rather console their colleague but not to address her in such a manner to denigrate her personality in public. She again advised the minority women MPs to soberly reflect on the matter and approach her with an apology.
“We expect them to console with her but not to verbally abuse and attack her using placards, we need an unqualified apology or else we will take a decision,” She stated.
She called on other NGOs, women organizations and stakeholders to join hands in condemning such comments and attacks on women in general.
