The chiefs and people of Dixcove, a coastal community in the Ahanta West District, of the Western Region on Saturday September 1, 2018 climaxed their 2018 Dixcove Kundum Festival with a grand durbar.
The Honorable Member of Parliament for the Ahanta West Constituency, Lawyer Ebenezer Kojo Kum, in a good will message to the chiefs and people of the Area said the occasion should be used to strengthen the love, fellow feeling and brotherliness that existed among their forbearers.
“As we re-enact the celebration of this cultural heritage, I urge you to reinvigorate the communal spirit, discipline and sustained hard work for the betterment of our people,” he stated.
He seized the opportunity to implore the people of Upper Dixcove Traditional Area to use the occasion to resolve to work harder for the rapid development of the community.
The theme for this year’s Kundum Festival is, “Dixcove Nkosuo” meaning “the development of Dixcove”
The MP said the focus should be a test to the community’s forward march to achieving the much needed development for it’s people.
“We would be measured by how successfully we have been able to fully explore our resources for the benefit of the people of this Traditional Area in particular and the municipality as a whole,” he stated.
He craved the indulgence of Nananom, to remind those in responsible positions, including traditional rulers, public servants, religious people and the entire citizenry to make every sacrifice necessary to uphold the principles of selfless commitment that characterized the forebears of the land.
The Kundum Festival is an annual ceremony celebrated by the people to thank God for the abundance of food in the area at the time of harvest, usually between the months of July and September.
The festival portrays the rich cultural values of the people of Dixcove located in a strategic coastline zone, on a beautiful cave with breathtaking view points.
This is the first time the people of the area have successfully celebrated the festival in a long while. This is after about two decades of inconsistencies following the death of the late Nana Hima Dekyi XIII. After her death there were issues relating to succession, and so it was just about two and half years ago that they were able to install the rightful successor to the throne in the person of Obrempon Hima Dekyi XIV.
Traditionally, you cannot organise a festival when members of the royal family are bereaved. In situations like that it is required of the Paramountcy to wait.
They were able to organise the funeral of their late chief last year after the successful enstoolment of Obrempon Hima Dekyi XIII which paved way for the celebration of the annual Kundum Festival.
Dixcove is located approximately 35 km west of the Western Region regional capital of Sekondi-Takoradi.
