Two satisfied clients of the Reproductive Health Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital have commended the management and staff of the centre for the excellent service rendered to them.
The two clients – Mimi Ellis and Obiba Efua in a short letter copied to African Eye Report said: ” All in all, we had an extraordinary experience at the Reproductive Health Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and would like to commend them for their excellent work! Ayekoo!
“Special commendation goes to senior nursing officers- Madam Rose Aduful, Madam Kate and Madam Grace of the Reproductive Health Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
We applaud your warmth, professionalism, empathy and amazing sense of humor! You are truly called to do what you do and we appreciate you so much!”, they stated in their commendation letter.
Below is their letter
We were acting like teenage girls even though “life had begun” for us! I mean we are both in our early 40s. What was the problem? We had to go to the hospital and get our long expired (literally) contraceptives removed and replaced.
We had been postponing the trip for well over three months mainly because, well, we are both busy women (excuses, excuses), and we were certainly not looking forward to getting probed and prodded (aha! The real reason!)
On this note, I would like to ask – why do our men not embrace getting snipped? But I digress….Definitely another discussion for another day!
We finally decided to bite the bullet and just go and get it over and done with. We chose Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. We had already been told they accepted walk-ins so there was no need for an appointment.
A lovely car park attendant helped us get a good spot (must be our lucky day) and we began our walk to the Reproductive Health Department. We were not scared but we were very apprehensive – so apprehensive that at a certain point were holding and squeezing each other’s hands! Yes, I said 40+! In retrospect, I think it was because our contraceptive devices had expired for quite a while.
Ladies please get your contraceptives replaced on time.
We saw the building, squeezed each other’s hands, squealed a little, composed ourselves (game face on!) and walked in – confidently.
Our amazing experience started at the front desk! The staff received us with warm, welcoming smiles, and as we made our enquiry, the responses were nothing short of very professional, friendly and reassuring.
As it turned out, they could do our pap smears as well (Did I mention that those were long overdue too? Please don’t judge). When we mentioned that we might not have enough cash to get everything done, they said we could pay via Mobile Money!
That completely blew us away! A public health facility offering such excellent service and incorporating the use of technology, was very impressive.
So this is what was going to happen – they would check our vitals, go through a counselling session to discuss and record our medical histories, preferences, allay any fears, address any concerns, give advice, allow us to make informed choices and then finally do the our bidding. And oh, they referred to us as clients, not patients!
The waiting room was clean and comfortable and had an infomercial/educational video of the various methods of contraception showing. This gave clients a lot of information before the counselling sessions. The wait was not long.
Our vitals were taken without any fuss and our counselling sessions were excellent! The procedures – “remove and replace” – were done with the highest level of professionalism and empathy.
One remarkable fact is that although we were counselled by different nurses, our experiences (after we compared notes) were practically the same and very impressive!
The same nurse handled both of our “remove and replace” procedures and she was simply astounding! We received a lot of information and advice for after-care and we were also encouraged to ask questions. We asked for the “remove and replace” nurse’s contact number just in case we had any questions later and she willingly gave it to us.
All in all, we had an extraordinary experience at the Reproductive Health Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and would like to commend them for their excellent work! Ayekoo!

God bless you!
