F5, the specialist in application delivery networking (AND) technology for the delivery of web applications, as well as security and network and cloud resources, has moved from the Challengers to the Leaders quadrant in the latest Gartner Magic Quadrant report for 2017 for web application firewalls (WAF). The move, as at August 2017, showcases F5’s commitment to enhancing behaviour-based anomaly detections, its progress in cloud-based WAF service, and the fact that F5 remains one of the most frequently cited vendors in WAF appliance shortlists.
This is according to Simon McCullough, major channel account manager at F5, who says, “WAFs protect web applications against a variety of attacks, notably injection attacks and application-layer denial of service (DoS), and are an increasingly important part of an organisation’s cyber security requirements. The WAF market is growing, driven by the adoption of cloud-based WAF services, and the Gartner report mentions F5’s strengths as including our product strategy and our technical architecture. The F5 WAF offering is a software module called Application Security Manager (ASM) for our Big-IP ADC platform. The F5 solutions also include the option of running a stand-alone WAF, as well as managed cloud-based WAF service and a DDoS scrubbing service, F5 Silverline.
“The recent release of Silverline WAF Express, our lower-price, tier offering without managed services, has also got the attention of potential clients. F5 also already integrates into standard DevOps platforms, which facilitates large organisations that are looking for flexible WAF appliances.”
Anton Jacobsz, managing director at Networks Unlimited, a value-added distributor of F5 in Africa, concludes, “Gartner’s Magic Quadrant reports provide a graphical and competitive positioning of types of technology providers in markets where growth is high and provider differentiation is distinct. Being singled out in the Leaders quadrant for the 11th year in a row is a wonderful acknowledgement for F5 of its current WAF capabilities and its positioning for the future.”
