How Corruption Became an Issue

The Ghanaian football industry has had its fair share of troubles.

The documentary made by leading journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas highlighted the corrupt practices such as match-fixing undertaken by referees and senior officials of the football association. Called Number 12, the documentary showed the involvement of more than 77 referees and officials and hit the football scene big time!

The Normalisation Committee’s announcement brings a respite for the fans who have been going through a six-month break from football action. Till now the 2018-19 football calendar in Ghana had been put off balance by the investigation and is going to resume from January. This will keep the football clubs busy till they begin their new calendar year in August.

The announcement about the new competition was made in a statement released by the Committee’s president, Dr. Kofi Amoah. The statement read that the GFA Normalisation Committee was pleased to announce the way ahead for the continuation of domestic football activities in Ghana. They have come up with a new competition structure which will be put into action from January 26, 2019, to April 21, 2019.

The competition in January will include 48 Division One League clubs and 16 Premier League clubs in the country. The matches are meant to keep the clubs busy during the GFA normalization process. It will also provide an opportunity for selecting the representatives for Confederations Cup and CAF Champions League. Fans will also have the opportunity to catch some exciting action and support their stars in the new competition.

The Committee said that they had put in extra effort to gather the resources to make this competition a reality. This was made possible by the support and quest of members of the football association and the fans who love football and their country. The committee will announce the full format of the competition and the detailed schedule in a short time.

The Normalisation Committee is also going through arrangements to kick off the women’s and regional football matches once again. They expressed that they are looking forward to the return of domestic football in Ghana with the support of all the stakeholders. The committee also urged all the football fans to embrace the new beginning and show their enthusiasm for upcoming matches at different venues.

The Ghana Football Association was dissolved after the screening of the documentary. The FIFA appointed the Normalisation Committee to head the developments of football in the country, and they have shown good promise in bringing things back on the track.
