In the heat of the Ayawaso West Wuogon fracas, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration is planning yet another recruitment of mostly party members into the police service through a circumvention it has dubbed “Priority Recruitment Slots”, Whatsup News can report.
During the 11th Sitting of the first meeting of Parliament on Thursday February 14, 2019, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, told Parliament that the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) is in discussion with the Police Service to give priority recruitment to personnel from the security module of the YEA programme, despite them having different training standards from regular police training.
In the Parliamentary Hansard of 14th February, the Minister stated: “I wish to indicate that the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) is currently in discussions with the Ghana Police Service (GPS) on the possibility of giving priority recruitment slots to the recently exited personnel under the Security Module of the Agency in future recruitment exercises by the Ghana Police Service.”
Critics have often noted that many of those drafted into this YEA security module are predominantly NPP party sympathisers and foot-soldiers, some are even alleged to belong to the party’s vigilante organisations like the Delta Force, Invisible Force, Bulldogs, etc.
The Minister admitted that the police service has limited slots for new recruits , and also that the YEA standards was totally different from that of the Police, yet he pleaded with members of parliament to arm-twist the police service to admit these new YEA recruits.
“The initiative by the Agency is quite challenging as the Ghana Police Service more often than not has limited space for recruitment in terms of numbers. The Police Service standards are also different from that of YEA…I appeal to Honorable Members to add their voice to this call to ensure that a larger number of the recently exited personnel of the Security Module of the Agency are placed on the Police recruitment schedule,” the Minister pleaded with legislators.
This is coming close in the heels of controversies surrounding the placement of the ruling party’s vigilante group members on National Security recruitment schedule. This resulted in the unprofessional acts of brutalities these armed goons meted out to unarmed civilians during the just concluded Ayawaso West Wuogon By-elections.
