Metropolitan Chief Executive of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah has urged city dwellers to come out in their numbers and participate in the upcoming Millennium Marathon since keeping fit could reduce the risk of heart related diseases.
According to him records from the Public Health Directorate of the Assembly indicates that, 70 percent of deaths recorded in Accra, could be attributed to cardiac arrest adding that participate in such an event would reduce such fatalities.
Mohammed Adjei Sowah said this on Friday 17th August 2018 when organizers of the Millennium Marathon 2018 paid a courtesy call on him to inform him of activities lined up ahead of the September 22 event.
He promised his support for the event and assured that, he would be there to participate just as he did last year.
He urged organisers to also use the event to project the city of Accra, adding that just as the Boston and London Marathons, attract participants from all over the world, the upcoming Millennium Marathon could be used as a great platform to showcase what Accra has to offer to the rest of the world.
“Sports such as the Millennium Marathon is a strong marketing tool and a very big competition we can leverage on to promote the capital city Accra,” he said.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Millennium Marathon, Mr. Ashin Morton promised an exciting event which would ultimately project the city of Accra and the country, adding that, the event would host over 10,000 athletes from across the country and many sporting icons including Stephen Appiah, John Paintsil.
He revealed that finalists of this year’s marathon would be rewarded with return tickets to participate in the next Dubai Marathon.
Dr. Vanessa Atikpui, a member of the team, encouraged Ghanaians to participate in the marathon in order to keep fit and stay healthy, stressing that living a sedentary lifestyle was a major cause of cardiac arrest in Ghana.
