Lunatics are the causes of Bush fires in Northern Region – EPA

The Environmental protection agency says lunatics who are left to roam aimlessly, cause bush fires in the Northern Region.

The Northern Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, Abu Iddrisu, revealed this at the opening of the annual general meeting of Amnesty International in Tamale on Saturday. He explained that, during the harmattan season, lunatics often set fire under trees to keep them warm, and in most cases such fires spread and cause massive bush fires. Mr. Iddrisu expressed concern over the activities of local hunters who also set fire to the bush in the name of hunting.

He commended the Gonja Traditional Council for banning commercial charcoal production and wood logging that causes land degradation and urged other chiefs in the region to emulate the example.

Amnesty International is an international human rights organisation, whose activities cut across all human rights including the right to exploit the environment.

The Board Chairman of Amnesty International George Aggrey said this year’s meeting focuses on the environment because of the important role the environment plays in the lives of people. He said though every individual has the right to exploit the environment, it also comes with responsibility.

Mr. Aggrey stressed the importance of sustainable use of the environment to ensure that, future generations do not suffer the consequences of the misuse of environment by the present generation. He urged chiefs to partner the Environmental Protection Agency, to prevent the environment from further degradation.
