The Central regional police command has arrested eight persons suspected to be among the mob that attacked the Mankessim police station on Tuesday night following the arrest of a taxi driver.
According to the police command, the driver, Ibrahim Iddrisu, who had five occupants heading to Mankessim, at about 2030 hours on Tuesday ignored signals of police officers who were at the police snap check points at Ekumfi Abor junction and Akwakrom, all on the Apam-Mankessim motor road. This caused suspicion among the police officers who pursued them to Mankessim Zongo where the driver of the taxi cab was finally arrested and sent to the Mankessim police station after all the other occupants had escaped.
DCOP Paul Manly N. Awini, the central regional police commander, addressing the press said, about 15 minutes later, a group numbering about 50, armed with cutlasses, knives, stones and other implements, went to attack and vandalised items like plastic chairs, wooden bench, dressing mirror and stationery at the Mankessim Police station.
Two police officers, G/L/ Cpl. Emmanuel Adjei and G/L/Cpl Emmanuel Assan, were assaulted in the process.
DCOP Manly Awini added that, the “regional police command upon intelligence gathered, dispatched a team [of] hundred and twenty policemen to Ekumfi Eyisam” for a swoop and in the process, “eight of the suspects believed to have taken part in the attack on the police were arrested and brought to Cape Coast.”
The suspects include Kwesi Sagoe; 35, Kojo Mprim; 46, Samuel Opoku; 37, Kofi Boateng, Patrick Sagoe; 16, Kwesi Amoah; 42, Danso Bernard; 22, and Razak Kassim; 45.
Manly Awini assured that efforts were underway to arrest the others and urged the public to furnish the police with any information related to that.
