The Honourable Member of Parliament (MP) for the Akatsi North in the Volta region, Peter Nortsu, has given out over one thousand coconut seedlings worth Ghc2600.00 to Farmers in his constituency.
The supply of the hybrids from Dwarf and Tall varieties, for high-yielding coconut palms which are expected to bear fruit from three to four years is in line with the MPs’ Community Development Programme to alleviate poverty in the area.
According to the MP, he has through series of community engagements realized that the “poverty level among my people is high and there is the need to do something about it, which arises out of unemployment in the area. I felt there was the need to engage them in a vocation that can give them livelihood, so i organized meetings with them as to which vacation one is interested”.
He said his people are mainly into cereal farming but they have complained of low yield couple with other negative factors, hence the decision to try cash crops too with small groups.
“Coconut plantation is very new in my area and we have decided to start with it. And the group has 13 members and we have prepared 13 hectares of land to start with.
“If they manage it well, from next year, we shall expand and start with other crops too,” he promised.
