The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Central Tongu constituency, Alexander Gabby Hottordze, has presented Motorbikes, Corn Milling Machines and Exercise Books valued at GH₵ 88,000.00 to the Central Tongu District Assembly.

The items: Eight Motorbikes for Circuits Supervisors, 10,000 Exercise Books for school children, and Two Corn Milling Machines for Women’s Group in two electoral Areas of The Constituency.

At a short presentation ceremony held at the forecourt of the Assembly at Adidome, the MP said “I’m a happy man today, The Constitutional Day to honour part of my promise to you”,

“When I started my campaign for the primaries, I promised to support education to succeed and I thought a teacher must be supported in that direction,”.

According to him, there is a need for succession planning for others to take over from people like him because he will never be the MP for life. He said one of the ways the youth could take over from the current leadership is through effective teaching and learning, hence “my decision to support our children with these learning materials”.

He however noted that supervision of schools and children is weak in the area but hoped that, with the help of the motorbikes things will change for the better.

This donation and other donations like over 200 mono desks to students under the Free SHS program and about 500 street lights for some selected communities were sponsored through his share of the District Assemblies Common Fund. He pledged to do more in the coming years with their support.

Receiving the items on behalf of the respective groups, the District Chief Executive of the Area, Thomas Moore Zonyrah was grateful to The MP and promised that everything will be properly delivered accordingly, adding that “the item will enhance performance”.

The DCE sadly revealed that, last year The BECE results show that “not even a single student record single aggregate”, a situation he attributed to Teacher absenteeism as well as students who were noted for Facebooking and whatsappping during class hours.

He again praised the MP for his works and asked for more, “our MP is very much interested in developing our area and I will not hesitate to support him to succeed”.

Responding to some of the issues raised, The District Director of Education Henry Hevi stated that, when schools resume, there will be mass transfer of teachers as means to check on them.

He noted that, the school was able to maintain its average result in 2016 through 2017 but the signs shows clearly on the wall for 2018 BECE when the result dropped from 46 percent to 15.2 percent. He added that the school’s administration is not proud about the result since the near-by district are performing better than them.

The school’s administration then sought to find out the cause of the problem it was discovered that the low performance was as a result of parental neglect and immoral act on the part of some of the students and on the parts of some the teachers.

Hevi said, “come January 15 when school resumes teachers who will have higher number of failed students will be moved to other schools to make sure that the School attains it preferred results. He also said, this will be set as a warning to all teachers who practice immorality in schools.
