Over the past week or so, two major politicians in this country have virtually been on each other’s throat with allegations and counter allegations. They are both coming from the stables of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
While the Northern Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Daniel Bugri Naabu is accusing the Minister responsible for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Madam Otiko Afisa Djaba of conniving to murder an NPP kinpin, the Minister says the Chairman has been accepting bribes from people and promising them government appointments.
The Minister had described Mr Naabu as a bribe-taking politician who goes around extorting money, cows and goats from people with the promise of securing appointments for them in the Akufo-Addo led government. This was after the NPP Chairman scuttled a meeting being held by the Minister in the Northern region.
Apart from accusing the Minister of failing to inform him of the meeting since she was in his territory, Mr Naabu also alleged that the Minister was holding the meeting to plot how to scuttle the President’s appointment of a regional head for the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP), among others.
Some members of the public have called on these two senior politicians to respect their status in society and let sleeping dogs lie, others are also of the view that the issues mentioned in the allegations are too serious to be swept under the carpet and that there President of the land must initiative an official investigations into the matter.
Latest to join the call for clean investigations is Governance Watch Ghana, a think-thank group on governance issues across the African continent.
In a press statement yesterday, Governance Watch Ghana expressed the view that the issue in question is one that must be taken seriously and treated with the urgency that it deserves in view of the weight of the personalities involved.
We at The New Independent believes the call is in order as it will help establish the real facts in the matter and put clarifications on the issue. It is even more important considering the fact that the two personalities are from the President’s party and the bribery allegations in particular are coming just five month into his administration.
Mr President, your timely intervention will end this ‘nonsense’.
