Some Branches of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Greater Accra Region are accusing the National Headquarters of the party of encouraging vote buying ahead of the forthcoming regional delegates’ conferences.
A recent directive from the party’s National Headoffice says per Article 18(5) of the NDC Constitution, delegates to the regional conference should include constituency executives and former government appointees. It did not mention Branch Executives who recently voted to elect Constituency executives for the party.
In an interview with Ghananewsonline.com.gh, a young Political Activist and a Branch Chairman for the NDC at CAC ‘A’ in the Krowor Constituency of the Greater Accra Region, Nii Ayitey Armah, fumed at the directive, saying it will open the flood gates for vote buying.
Nii Armah said the National Executive Committee (NEC) initially agreed that the branches would take part in all the conferences up to the national level. However, the recent directive rather prioritizes the constituencies and a few former government appointees, exempting the branches. He said if this is allowed to stand then it is certain that aspirants are likely to use more than LCD TV sets to buy votes.
He alleged that last four years some aspirants bought votes with flat screen television sets and cash amounts were openly shared to delegates at Dodowa. Nii Armah fears that maybe cars would be shared in exchange for votes this time round.
The Krowor CAC ‘A’ Branch Chairman also alleged that aspirants who want to be part of the Greater Accra Regional Executives are emulating the New Patriotic Party (NPP), by exchanging money for votes ahead of the Greater Accra Regional conference.
Nii Ayitey Armah prayed, “NEC would take a second look at the directives to include the nine branch executives so as to reduce vote buying syndrome that wants to catch up with the NDC”.
