Call it karma or divine intervention, but most ardent critics of the immediate past President and potential President of Ghana in 2021, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, have in one way or the other been rendered useless, disgraced or rendered persona non grata in the political and social landscape of Ghana.
Few years after losing political power to the longtime opposition leader, Nana Akufo-Addo, most Ghanaians are clamoring for the return of John Dramani Mahama, who has been described as the most visionary Ghanaian leader after Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the man who won political independent for Ghana.
As stated in the Holy Books (1 Chronicles 16:22 and Psalms 105:15) that “touch not my anointed, and do my prophets no harm” TodayGhanaNews has compiled a list of personalities who took upon themselves a task to denigrate former president John Mahama without provocation and at the end of the day has become a total disgrace or persona non grata in the Ghanaian society and beyond. The list includes Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Mensa Otabil, Otiko Afisa Djaba, Bugri Naabu, Owusu Bempah, Nana Obiri Boahen, and Manasseh Awuni Azure.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
Current vice president of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, arguably tops the list.
Before the 2016 general elections, Dr. Bawumia organized series of lectures on the state of the Ghanaian economy, making capital of the depreciation of the Cedi (the local currency) against major trading currencies of the world at the time. He was the main proponent who tagged former president John Mahama as “Incompetent”.
Two years after ascending to political power, the Cedi has depreciated to the lowest minimum in the history of Ghana and the economic situation in Ghana has extremely worsened.
Moreover, all the electioneering campaign promises made by Dr. Bawumia has become a chafing. It is now obvious that Dr Bawumia has been relegated to the background by the NPP government for nonperformance. Dr. Bawumia has now been tagged a “liar and the most dishonest politician” in Ghana’s political history. His political carrier has now been tainted and discredited.
Dr. Mensah Otabil
Dr. Mensah Otabil once a revered preacher of the Word of God and a motivational speaker. He is the Founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) and the Central University. Without provocation, during the times Ghana was faced with severe energy crisis which the John Mahama administration inherited, Pastor Otabil joined forces with political opponents to discredit John Mahama and his administration. He is on record to have described the then president as not knowledgeable and a thief.
Recently in Ghana, there has been a plethora of bad news concerning the collapse of seven banks including the Capital Bank, UT Bank, BEIGE Capital Bank, Sovereign Bank, Construction Bank, UniBank and Royal Bank. Capital and UT banks were taken over by the GCB Bank while the remaining five have been merged and christened the Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited (CBG).
On the collapse of Capital Bank whose board Chairman happens to be Pastor Dr. Mensah Otabil, it is alleged that the board of directors in simple terms squandered their stated capital, putting the bank into a distressed situation needing urgent liquidity support.
The Bank of Ghana (BOG) advanced an amount of ¢610,000,000.00 of public money to the Capital Bank to keep it afloat such that depositors who are the ordinary citizens do not lose their savings. According to reports however, when the money hit the accounts of Capital Bank, the following disbursements were made: ¢65 million was transferred to Nordea Capital, ¢23.9 million was transferred to IFS, ¢27.5 million was given to a board member for business promotions and ¢130 million was transferred to All-Time Capital.
Dr. Mensa Otabil has been accused of being a party to the misuse of liquidity support given him by the Bank of Ghana.
The big question here is “where is the knowledge of Mensah Otabil in this matter and why did he steal public money?”
Dr. Mensah Otabil is now a discredited pastor and a looter of state funds.
Otiko Afisa Djaba
Former Women Organizer of the NPP and the immediate past Minister for Gender and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba, on countless occasions casts invectives on former president John Dramani Mahama, describing him as a man with ‘wicked heart’; A position she re-echoed severally
Otiko Djaba, during the 2016 electioneering campaign described the former President as one with a ‘wicked heart’ for superintending over abysmal performance of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) which was meant to benefit northerners.
She refused to heed to calls to retract the comment and apologize to the ex-President during her vetting in Parliament and other media platforms.
Minority members of the Appointments Committee who were unhappy with her refusal to apologize failed to approve of her nomination as a Minister.
Fast-forward 2018, Ms Otiko Afisa Djaba has become unpopular in the government of the NPP and fallout from the favors of the president. She was demoted from a Minister to an Ambassador, a position she turned down.
According to a bitter and disgraced Otiko Djaba, she rejected the offer by President Akufo-Addo because she had resigned from active politics and also want to relax and enjoy family life and, therefore, not ready to take up the appointment as Ambassador to Italy.
She said, “I am bowing out of politics to take care of my ex-husband who has had stroke for the past six years. I am the one who has been taking care of him since he got sick and I cannot abandon him now,” she stated in media interviews.
Daniel Bugri Naabu
The former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP few days to the 2016 general election, accused former President Mahama of attempting to bribe him (Daniel Bugri Naabu) to turn against flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.
He claimed among other things that, in a meeting with the President and his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, he was promised GH¢3.3 million and a V6 Mitsubishi Pajero vehicle with registration number GS 687-16 and a brand New V8 Land Cruiser to fabricate stories against the NPP leader.
When the NPP government got power, then Gender Minister Otiko Djaba Bugri Naabu of collecting people’s monies, goats, cows, among other goodies as bribes from wannabe appointees, DCEs and MMCEs in the northern region.
Surprisingly, a person who allegedly refused millions of Cedis and a luxurious vehicle while in opposition, was being accused by a leading member of his own government and party of accepting goats and other goodies from people and promising them appointments.
To add salt to injury, Daniel Bugri Naabu, was shamefully defeated as Northern Regional chairman of the NPP by one Alhaji Mohammed Samba and has since fizzled out of politics.
Bugri Naabu prior to the regional elections faked a car accident on the Damongo-Bole highway, towed his mangled car to the venue of the election to amass sympathy votes but this didn’t work for him as he was massively disgraced at the polls.
He has now become a persona non grata in the NPP.
Nana Obiri Boahen
In the heat of the 2016 general elections, Nana Obiri Boahen, a leading member of the opposition NPP and former Deputy Minister of Interior under the Kufuor administration, called John Mahama a lunatic and continued to state that, “anybody who wants to still see the NDC in power, needs to go to Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital for brain scan”.
He added that the hardship that has beleaguered the economy under John mahama administration is because of some pardonable mistakes certain voters committed in 2008 and 2012.
He said this in an interview with Okay FM on Thursday April 17, 2014 (see, “Go for brain scan if you want NDC to win 2016 – Lawyer Boahen”, Peacefmonline/Ghanaweb, April 17, 2014).
In other words, Nana Obiri Boahen was implying that anyone who will or intends to vote for NDC in 2016 is of unsound mind.
After assuming political power, Nana Obiri Boahene was appointed deputy general secretary of the NPP and was later suspended by his own party for making some damming corruption allegations against the president, the seat of government and the NPP.
According to a secret recording made by a USA based Kwaku Skirt of Apple68 radio, Obiri Boahen accused top government officials of ‘grabbing and sharing public funds among the top echelon in government”.
Details emerging from the audio recording which captures the voice of Nana Obiri Boahen revealed that the Presidency gifted the party GH¢50 billion for its extraordinary National Delegates Conference in Cape Coast.
But Obiri Boahen is heard lamenting how he was given a paltry GH¢5,000 as a member of the resolution committee out of the GH¢50 billion.
“When we were going to Cape Coast the other time, I was given GH¢3,000 as a member of the Resolution Committee and an additional GH¢2,000 for fuel. Meanwhile, the Flagstaff House gave the party an amount of GH¢50 billion”, he alleged.
Since the Kwaku skirt’s expose,’ the party has since asked Nana Obiri Boahen to refrain from speaking to the media in any official capacity till his issues with the disciplinary committee is fully resolved.
Surprisingly, the man (Nana Obiri Boahen) who said, it will be over his dead body for President John Mahama to become president again, has died a political death. God is good.
Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah
The General Overseer of the Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah, has a penchant for only glooming revelations on former president John Mahama and even went ahead to say that the former president will die in 2016.
Not long ago, he was accused by fellow men of God of being a fake pastor with a bleaching face. He was later accused of womanizing and other social ills. Reports have it that his fourth wife has divorced him under strange circumstances, less than six months after they go married.
So, who is Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah? I think false prophet is an understatement…This man is a real con, attention seeker, looking to deceive and entice people to his church with such a ridiculous prophesy.
Manasseh Azure Awuni
Manasseh after winning that prestigious Best Ghanaian Journalist Award continued his professional journalistic work admirably, winning more and more awards. Smoothly he was moving, captivating the souls and love of many Ghanaians. Then he metamorphosed himself into an investigative journalist, anti-corruption crusader and a critic of John Mahama.
He was for once a non-politically tainted Journalist rising and performing magic. He was feared by state agencies. Private organizations that had something to do with the then government shivered at the mention of his name. He was simply thorny in the flesh of many individuals and institutions.
Unfortunately, since NPP won political power, he got himself consumed in the politics of the NPP where political reality is that clowns and pretenders see themselves as the agents of history.
Not long ago, he would publish scathing articles about alleged rotten deals and corrupt practices that the John Mahama administration was allegedly swimming in. A folder many thought was for his corruption crusading agenda. A folder many thought was going to use for a national course against all corrupt practices regardless of who was in government. But unknowing to many, the Manasseh’s folder was on a mission! A mission to help end the presidency of President Mahama. An evil mission that at the end consumed him to oblivion.
To borrow the words of reggae legend, Peter Hubert McIntosh, “For how long can you keep a good man down? It is relating to the people and the voice of the people is the voice of the Almighty God”
