NUGS Executive, Others go to Court over mandatory NSS insurance package

Four national service personnel, Mr. Solomon Anapansah, NUGS programs and Projects Secretary and three others, Toxla Caleb Elikem, Kwadzodeh Enoch Lelabi and Timothy Donko have filed an interlocutory injunction at the Accra High Court to stop the National Service Secretariat (NSS) from going ahead to deduct Gh¢15 monthly as insurance package for national service personnel.

The national service secretariat in October this year announced mandatory insurance package for service personnel amidst opposition from some personnel describing it as fraudulent.

According to NSS, the insurance package will include 500 free SMS each month, 100% bonus on all MTN recharge made by personnel and a free movie viewing twice a year at Silver Star Cinema(s).

Service personnel will also enjoy free browsing on Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, Instagram, WeChat etc. Service persons who suffer accidents are entitled to GH¢3,000 among other benefits.

Despite the lucrative nature of the package, the four service persons are against its mandatory nature and have filed a suit yesterday seeking to stop NSS from making any deduction from their allowance.

Some service persons described the deduction of Gh¢15 from their meagre ¢559 allowance as exploitation.

According to the writ of summons the hearing of the application for the injunction will come off Friday, 15 December 2017.
