Ghana’s musical talent Okyeame Kwame has joined stars from around the world including David Beckham, Mahershala Ali, and Hugh Jackman to take part in Super Dads – a new UNICEF initiative launched to celebrate fatherhood, and highlight the importance of love, play, protection and good nutrition for the healthy development of young children’s brains.

The initiative is to celebrate Father’s Day which is celebrated on Sunday June 18 in Ghana and over 80 countries in the world.

In addition to being one of Ghana’s seasoned musicians and entertainers, Okyeame Kwame is a father of two: Kwame (8 years old) and Sante (5 years old). His close relationship with his son and daughter has been demonstrated largely on social and broadcast media.

To support UNICEF’s campaign and to celebrate Father’s Day (which falls on Sunday June 18), the music star and his two children star in a short 30-second UNICEF film which will be shown on UNICEF social media channels on Father’s Day.

“For me, spending quality time with my children is the icing on the cake after a long day,” said Okyeame Kwame. “I get to come home to them, play and help them with homework and I forget any issues I may be dealing with. It’s honestly is the best part of the day for me.”

The involvement of fathers is crucial in a child’s life. Studies show that children with involved, nurturing and caring fathers have better educational outcomes, higher IQs, better linguistic and cognitive capacities, are more confident, motivated and disciplined.

UNICEF is encouraging dads and their children in Ghana to share special moments of their time together using the hashtag #EarlyMomentsMatter and @UNICEFGhana on Facebook and Twitter. Some of those memories will be featured on the campaign’s gallery between 6 and 18 June.

“The first few years of a child’s life can have a profound impact on his or her future,” said David Duncan UNICEF Ghana Deputy Representative (Acting).

“When loved, well-nourished and cared for in a safe and stimulating environment, children have the chance to develop the skills they need to embrace opportunities and contribute positively to their communities. Just by spending quality time with your son or daughter – reading, playing, eating, and laughing together – you can play such a vital role in your child’s life.

“You’re not only creating memories, but you’re giving them a much better start in life.  This Father’s Day, let’s be fair and help give your children the best start in life.”
