The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem (KEEA) constituency, Samuel Atta Mills, has called on the government to as a matter of urgency operationalize the idled Komenda Sugar Factory (KSF).
According to him, “the teeming youths in the constituency are in need of job so why should the fully completed factory which can create thousands of direct and indirect jobs sits there idle….while this same government preaches one district one factory”.
Atta Mills made this remarks in an interview with ghananewsonline.com.gh on the sidelines of the Edina Bakatue festival celebration over the weekend.
When asked the state of the factory at the time the NDC was leaving office and what he thinks could be the reason why the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has since not operationalized the factory, the younger brother of the late president John Evans Atta Mills said “the factory was complete and ready for use” when the NDC was leaving office.
“Let me tell you all what it is, when the new government came, they thought that there was kind of malfeasance in building the factory and they wanted to do value for money audit to make sure that we did the right thing…..they’ve done it, they’ve realised that we did the right thing…..why don’t they go ahead to open it……what are we trying to do with it……we already have two factories; fish processing plant [in Elmina] and the Komenda sugar factory….we have to make them [factories] work…..they [youths] need job”,
Debunking the allegations that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government did not consider the raw materials when planning for the establishment of the factory, Atta Mills said the NDC had secured a loan facility to be used cultivate the sugarcanes to feed the factory yet the current government has turned deaf ear on it despite his continuous call on the government.
