The Editor-In-Chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has demanded that the Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Marfo publicly retract and apologize to Ghanaians, for suggesting that the Chinese illegal mining kingpin Aisha Huang was not prosecuted due to the $2bn Sinohydro barter with the Chinese.
Yaw Osafo Marfo has come under huge backlash after he told a Town Hall meeting abroad that due to the now good relationship Ghana has with China, it does not serve any Ghanaian interest to have Aisha Huang jailed in Ghana for illegal mining, where she’s alleged to have committed the crime in connivance with several others.
But Abdul Malik Kweku Baako commenting on the issue on News File, who did not side with the call for the Senior Minister’s sack, however, called on him to do the honourable thing of apologizing after that gaff.
“It is true that jailing one person Aisha Huang, in this case, will not resolve Ghana’s economic problem, that is true. But jailing her if indeed based on the evidence before the court also will enhance that culture of deterrence that we seek to grow, will bring about a certain incentive for the impunity we are all worried about. So really that’s why he ought not to have brought in this whole point in order to create credibility and integrity challenges for himself and the administration that he belongs to.
“It is difficult to defend him in this score and perhaps he’ll do the honourble thing, I’m told there’s rationalization, explanation, clarification all those ones I realize have had no effect. He may have to do an open apology and retraction.”
