The impasse between Otumfuo’s Akwamuhene, Baffour Kwame Akowuah III and the Omanhene of Manso Nkwanta Traditional Area, Nana Bi-Kusi Appiah, as to who is the overlord of Datano has been resolved by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The Asantehene has affirmed that Datano is under Manso Nkwanta and that the Omanahene of Manso Nkwanta Traditional Area, Nana Bi-Kusi Appiah is the overlord.

Datano is a community under the Manso Adubia Stool and owes allegiance to the Manso Nkwanta Traditional Area in the Amansie West district of Ashanti. Datano is the Benkum (Left wing) of Manso Nkwanta Traditional Council.

However, the Asafohene Achamfuor Baffour Kwame Akowuah III had claimed Datano owes allegiance to him and thus supported the installation of a chief for the community last year.

Upon the death of   the chief of Datano, Nana Kwadwo Boateng III alias Mr. Kwadwo Nimo in February 2016, a chief in the person of Nana Adjei alias Kwadwo Francis was installed for the town who swore the oath of allegiance to the chief of Abiram in April 2016, with the support of Otumfuo’s Akwamuhene and overlord of Manso Akwamu who is also the chief of Asafo in Kumasi.

Nana Adjei claimed Nana Boateng III who he succeeded was not a member of the royal Asona family.

The Omanhene of Manso Nkwanta Traditional Area where Datano serves as Benkum wing also installed a chief in the person of Nana Akwasi Boateng IV alias Nana Akwasi Buor on December 12, 2016 with the support of Nana Pomaa II, Obaapanin of Datano.

Nana Akwasi Boateng IV also disputed the claim by Nana Adjei   and indicated that the deceased chief had been odikro of Datano for more many years.

The fight for supremacy over Datano thus resulted in clashes by followers of the two chiefs compelling Nana Akwasi Boateng IV, the chief of Datano to go into exile following an attack on his palace on December 12, 2016 by followers of the Asafohene.

The development was brought to the attention of the Asantehene Otumfuo, Osei Tutu II for his intervention.

At the sitting of the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace last Monday, Otumfuo declared that Datano falls under the jurisdiction of the Manso Nkwanta Traditional Area and therefore Nana Bi-Kusi Appiah is the overlord of Datano.

He indicated that the dispute is basically centred on the legibility of the deceased chief of Datano and cautioned the Manso Nkwantamanhene to do due diligence to ensure that a legitimate royal is enstooled chief of Datano.

He charged the two chiefs to submit list of communities and areas that owed allegiance to the two chiefs in a report to the Asantehene for documentation to forestall future claims and counter claims for lands and communities.

With the resolution, the two chiefs have sworn the Great oath of Asante (Otumfuo’s Ntamkese) not to engage in further hostilities over Datano to let peace prevail.
