Student Activist, Kabu Nartey, to contest General Secretary of NUGS

Renowned Student Activist and Award-winning Communicator, Kabu Nartey, has officially announced his decision to run for the 2017|2018 National General Secretary of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

In a press briefing at the Ghana Institute of Journalist, in Accra, Kabu Nartey, addressed a cross section of students from some Universities and the media on his new political ambition.

According to him, his decision was a thoughtful one and reflects the voices of the mass of students as he embarked on trips to interact with potential delegates of various schools.

“I respond to the call of the masses whom l seek to lead and this practical step to decentralise the competence of our Union”., he said.

The former Director of Communications of the Ghana University Debate Association and a Kufuor Scholar 2017, explained that, he rescinded the decision to contest for NUGS presidency which has been his initial campaign direction, because there seem to be an over-focus on the presidency with over 7 candidates to the neglect of other equally sensitive administrative offices like the General Secretary.

“Over the past years, there has been the temptations for aspirants to overly-focus on the presidency in the race…during our visits and  interactions with our brothers and sisters across Ghana, there were several calls { by our colleague students } to shift attention to the national general secretary position”, he explained.

He further disclosed that he was convinced to heed to this “mass call” after several interactions with students across Ghana who believe that he would complement that office with his rich background in media, communications advocacy and activism. “…this decision is not only based on the healthy and legitimate calls from colleague brothers and sisters but also based on the recognition and endorsement of what I could offer should I serve as the General Secretary”.

The Research Assistant at the African Center for International Criminal Justice (ACICJ) pledged not to compromise on these revolutionary ideologies as the secretariat offers a strategic position for him to develop and maintain a voice for his fellow Ghanaian students across Ghana and beyond. He hinted  his policies will be centered on Activism, Advocacy, Research and Media Alliance in the interest of students of Ghana.

He explained that since 1964, the General Secretary position has been limited to only correspondence and secretarial duties as confined in Article 41 of the constitution of the NUGS Constitution. However, he believes the General Secretary position could greatly augment the efforts of the other executive by adopting strong advocacy and activism to remaining relevant in matters pertaining to students’ educational and welfare issues.

He also stressed on the need for the secretariat to adopt a proper research mechanism in order to gather information about the Union  as the it looks to go into partnership with many sector players and stakeholders.

He promised periodic reviews  and evaluations of some of the existing policies and facilities enrolled by the Union in order to provide a very reliable mechanism to assess its effectiveness and impacts.

The 2017|2018 NUGS Congress comes off November 16 and it is expected to end the years of internal wrangling.
