The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Agona East constituency, Queenstar Maame Pokuah Sawyerr, has appealed to delegates voting in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regional delegates’ conference to elect servant-leaders, instead of arrogant self-seeking candidates.
Speaking to the media ahead of the conference that would select regional leaders for the party scheduled for Saturday, Sept 1, 2018 across the country Obaatanpa Sawyerr noted that, “leadership is all about service to the people you are presiding over. So, if you don’t have the attitude of a servant, you don’t qualify to be a leader, irrespective of your academic credentials.”
She added that, “it is for that reason I would like to remind delegates of the need to vote for people who have demonstrated the spirit of service over the years, but not self-seeking, arrogant persons who see leadership as positions to serve their selfish interest.”
She recalled that the NDC was founded on the principles of service to mankind and a desire by some concerned individuals to see the downtrodden rising up to their fullest potentials.
“If your leadership doesn’t help the downtrodden to benefit from the resources God has given them, then you don’t deserve the people’s vote,” she stated.
She warned the delegates against voting on monetary consideration since they hold the destiny of the party, the numerous supporters and Ghanaians in general in their hands; thus they need to vote with that fact at the back of their minds.
“The leaders you select could eventually become the national leaders who would be taking decisions on how the country’s resources are appropriated. If you allow money or other material things to influence you, then you are selling your destiny and that of the nation,” she advised
She wished all the candidates well and hoped that the best would be selected to lead the party to victory in 2020.
The NDC goes to polls on Saturday to elect regional executives to manage the affairs of the party at the regional level.
This would be followed later by other elections, culminating in the flagbearer contest later in December this year.
