A Hearts of Oak fan joined his ancestors during their game against Kpando Heart of Lions in the π‘―π’π’Žπ’π’˜π’ π‘ͺπ’‰π’‚π’“π’Šπ’•π’š π‘ͺ𝒖𝒑 that was hosted at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, August 11, 2024.

Identified as William Nii Laryea, multiple reports say the shock of the first goal that was conceded by the Phobias sparked the attack that left him unconscious.

Reports say the staunch fan was conveyed to a medical facility where he was pronounced dead by medical officials on duty even before the game ended.

The death was confirmed in a press statement on August 12, 2024 by Hearts as they pledged to ensure their fan receives a befitting funeral.

β€œThe Management of Accra Hearts of Oak with a heavy heart wishes to express our sincere condolences to the family of William Nii Laryea, who met his untimely death yesterday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Nii Laryea was a very passionate fan of the club who made time to watch all our games either home or away…His departure to eternity will not only affect his immediate family but also, we as a club since we would lose his unflinching support and the passion with which he follows the club.”

β€œWe hope to liaise closely with his family to ensure that we would contribute positively towards a successful final funeral rite of William Nii Laryea.”

Though the game ended in favour of coach Aboubakar Ouatarra’s side, the beginning was heartbreaking for the Phobias as they conceded an early goal inside 3 minutes.

They got parity in the 88th minute and went ahead to win 8-7 on penalties.
