The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources is pushing for a comprehensive reform of Ghanaโ€™s sanitation sector, spotlighting years of inefficiencies and a troubling lack of oversight in contracts awarded to Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group.

During a high-level engagement on Monday, April 14, the Member of Parliament for Mampong, Kwaku Ampratwum Sarpong, stated that the current trajectory is unsustainable and called for immediate changes.

โ€œIt can no longer be business as usual with Zoomlion,โ€ he asserted. โ€œPractically every assembly weโ€™ve engaged has expressed concerns about Zoomlionโ€™s lackluster or nonexistent delivery. This problem has lingered for far too long.โ€

These remarks come on the heels of fresh accusations from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), which flagged serious issues with the governmentโ€™s fumigation deal with Zoomlion.

The AMA noted that many of the agreements were signed without consulting key local authorities, leaving room for poor monitoring and minimal accountability.

Florence Kuukyi, the AMAโ€™s Director of Public Health, condemned the opaque nature of these contracts.

โ€œThese agreements are often finalized without our knowledge. In most cases, weโ€™re only informed after the fact when reports are submitted. Personally, I have never seen any fumigation activity take place,โ€ she revealed.

Kuukyi stressed the need to urgently revise the Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP) to ensure that local actors are actively involved in planning, implementation, and supervision.

โ€œLocal eyes are watching. If theyโ€™re doing the work properly, weโ€™ll see it. If not, weโ€™ll also see it,โ€ she added.

The committeeโ€™s call signals a potential shift in the countryโ€™s approach to waste management, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and community participation moving forward.
