A 35 year old native of Abeyee, a farming community in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem (KEEA) Municipality, was on Saturday adjudged the best farmer in the Municipality for 2018.
Charles Ampong Tawiah, according to the KEEA Municipal Director of Agriculture, Peter Kojo Dick, was adjudged the best farmer following his (Ampong Tawiah) ability to meet all the 10 laid down criteria.
Announcing Ampong Tawiah’s achievements, the director said, he had been practising farming for 19 years and had among other things, about 22 acres of oil palm plantation; five acres of orange plantation, three acres of coconuts; cassava, two acres; plantain, one acre; maize, two acres; five acres of watermelon farm and two acres of okro farm.
Dick added that, the best farmer also has a poultry farm (both exotic and local) and rears goats.
According to him, Tawiah seldom uses chemicals and fertilizer on his crops but often resort to traditional cultural practices and often supplies other farmers in the municipality with improved planting materials.
“Our 2018 municipal best farmer does not do farming alone but had also adopted three orphans and currently taking care of them,” Dick revealed.
In his address, Ampong Tawiah, thanked the municipal agric officers for recognising his work and urged the youth to go into farming. He urged all farmers to always engage and consult extension officers for advice and guidelines.
Among other things, he took away a double Decker refrigerator, a certificate, a set of Wellington boots, cutlasses, a double size mattress, a spraying machine, an LED TV and hand gloves.

Charles Ampong Tawiah is a basic six graduate.
In all, 16 farmers, fishersmen, institutions and organisations were awarded.

Best Disabled Farmer went to a visually impaired Opanyin Kojo Abraham from Besease
Municipal Best Youth farmer went to a 26 year old farmer, Gyesi Daniel from Abeyee
Municipal best woman farmer …. Francisca Mensah from Antado
P. Bio Rehabilitation centre grabbed the municipal best institution award
Best poultry farmer went to Issaka Mahmoud from Komenda
Best livestock farmer went to Wilson Acheampong from Memmpeasɛm
Municipal Best Crop Farmer ….Isaac Nyarkoh.
Best supportive staff award went to the secretary of the municipal agric directorate, madam Dorothy Kwoffie
Best extension officer …. Madam Faustina Amponsah.
2nd Runner up award went to Baobab Children foundation as the 1st runner up award was grabbed by Isaac Awortwe, a 32 year old university graduate from Besease.
