389 persons died from Jan. to Nov. in Ashanti Region – NRSA

The Ashanti Region recorded an increase in road accidents in 2019 with 389 lives perishing by the end of November.

This figure is 27 more than the whole of accidents recorded in 2018.

Investigations by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) revealed that most of the crashes which occurred on the Accra-Kumasi road were attributed to human error with the major one being overtaking.

The latest of such accident occurred on Boxing day in which seven people died including a three-month-old baby. Over 40 others suffered varying degrees of injuries and are receiving treatment or have been discharged from the hospital.

The Ashanti Regional Coordinator of the NRSA Simbiat Wiredu noted that despite the increase of speed ramps and other restrictive structures accidents continue to rise.

She believes the Police and other enforcement agencies will have to up their game with support of the public to overcome the menace.

“The Police should try and intensify their enforcement exercises especially with the Pragias, I think they have their own challenges but I can’t talk for them. The individual as well…if you are a Pragia owner and you’ve given it to someone who’s not 18 or 25 years you have to know that you’re flouting the law.”
