EC to charge GH¢10 for voter cards replacement

Per the timetable released by the commission in March for the 2024 general elections, the EC is on course to meet various timelines before submitting the provisional voter register to the political parties between July 9 and 18, 2024, and mounting an exhibition of the voter register between July 15 and 24, 2024.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced it will charge GH¢10.00 from individuals who have lost their voter ID cards and wish for a replacement.

Announcing the timelines for the replacement exercise expected to begin on Thursday, May 30, and end on Friday, June 14, 2024, the EC in a statement dated May 28, 2024, said “The commission wishes to inform all voters who wish to replace their missing voter ID cards to make payment for the replacement using the short code *222*1067#”

“The cost for replacement is Ten Ghana Cedis (GH¢10.00) only”, the EC emphasized.

The commission further added that applicants are to provide the reference code to the District Officer to facilitate the replacement of their cards.

Meanwhile, registration of first-time voters is still ongoing across the country and is expected to end today Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

Initially, the exercise was expected to end on Monday, May 27, 2024, but was extended.

Prior to the commencement of the exercise, the chairperson of the EC, Madam Jean Mensa gave a firm assurance that the commission would register all eligible persons who would turn up at the 1,053 registration centres, made up of 268 district offices and 785 additional centres in hard-to-reach areas with about 623,000 persons expected to be registered.

As of May 19, the EC revealed that it had registered 522,025 voters, with the Ashanti Region topping the chat with 90,480 registered voters.

In terms of gender distribution, out of the total registered voters, 246,455 were male (47.21 per cent), and 275,570 were female (52.79 per cent).
