CETAG withdraws all services over GTEC’s directive to freeze members’ July salary

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), following the freezing of its members’ July salaries, has withdrawn all its services.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) on Monday, July 22, 2024, instructed the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) to suspend the salaries of all striking CETAG members, except for the Principals, for July 2024.

The directive followed the teachers’ refusal to resume from their strike which has persisted for some weeks. They are demanding for better conditions of service.

CETAG, has, following the suspension of its members’ salaries, has on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, declared that it is withdrawing all of its services in response to the directive from the Education Minister.

The decision stems from an emergency meeting the Council held on Tuesday, July 23.

It noted that the decision was unanimous.

“In an emergency meeting of National Council, July 23, the council members took a unanimous decision to withdraw all our services including attendance to meetings, congregation ceremonies and provision of academic counselling services as well as supervision of students in the halls of residence with immediate effect until further notice,” part of the statement read.

The association noted that it had referred the directive to freeze its members’ July salaries which it deems illegal, to its lawyers for necessary action to be taken.

Meanwhile, GTEC has urged the striking members of CETAG to return to the classrooms, assuring them that their concerns are being addressed.
