Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has issued a stern warning to anyone planning to attack journalists during the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Historically, journalists have faced attacks from political party thugs while performing their duties during election periods, sometimes resulting in injuries. In an interview on GHOne TV during the launch of EIB Network’s Election Hub for the 2024 elections, Dwumfour emphasized that such attacks will no longer be tolerated.

“Journalists have endured enough during elections,” Dwumfour declared. “If you are a politician or part of any group and you cannot handle the presence of journalists, stay away from us. We will respond with hostility to any form of aggression; if you attack us, we will retaliate. This is not a case of tit for tat but a firm stand to ensure that journalists can do their work.”

He stressed the crucial role journalists play as intermediaries between the government and the public. “We serve as the bridge between the governed and the governors. Any attempt to break this link will be met with strong resistance. An attack on any media person is an attack on the GJA and on me personally as the GJA President. We will not be silenced or intimidated.”

Dwumfour’s warning highlights the GJA’s commitment to protecting journalists and ensuring they can operate freely and safely during the election period.
