Uber Increases Fare Rates In Kenya After Protest From Drivers

Uber has announced that it will increase fare prices for all its ride categories including the minimum price and the per-kilometer rates in Kenya to allow drivers to earn more.

In a meeting at its headquarters in Kenya, the company’s head of East African operations stated that the re-evaluation of fares in Kenya was done after consultation with its drivers.

The new minimum fare will be raised to KSh220, up from the previous KSh200. Uber will also work with auto industry players to help subsidize maintenance services for its drivers

Why This Matters

Last month, Kenya ride-hailing drivers staged a protest against Uber where they challenged the current rates and fares they received.

Some drivers resorted to demanding almost 2x the price of total fares from riders after completing trips.

“We’ve considered multiple factors to ensure drivers earn decent income while passengers still benefit from affordability. Increasing of the prices was informed by a review of the cost of living, drivers’ feedback, and not because of the protests only,” said Imran Manji.
