Some businesses operating within the Tema Free Zones enclave are threatening to close their businesses.

The Kpone Landfill Site, reported to be the country’s current largest landfill site, is slowly taking over the once highly sought-after industrial enclave. A couple of businesses are literally sharing a wall with the mountain of garbage.

A source within one of the businesses operating inside the Enclave, one of Ghana’s biggest manufacturing firms, has revealed that a financial service provider is holding back funding for a very important project until something is done about the landfill site.

According to the source, all attempts to get the authorities to address the impending disaster have yielded no result.

The source further added that it has been particularly difficult to get the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to a meeting to find a solution to the problem.

The companies that are greatly affected by this unfortunate situation include Ferro Fabrik Ltd, MND Metals Co. Ltd, Gapuma Ghana Ltd, Success Africa Ltd as well as Polytanks Ghana Limited.

This is most unfortunate since these companies happen to be among the largest manufacturing firms in the country, employing thousands of Ghanaians.

In a time of tough economic conditions, the layoffs that might occur as a result of the potential shutdowns would be truly devastating for many Ghanaians.
