The Royal Jamong Family of Bunkpurugu Accuses Vice President Bawumia and Solomon N. Boar of Meddling in Chieftaincy Affairs

The Royal Jamong Family expressed deep concern over what it describes as political interference by Vice President Dr. Mahamud Bawumia and the NPP parliamentary candidate for Bunkpurugu, Mr. Solomon N. Boar, in the ongoing chieftaincy dispute surrounding the Bunkpurugu skin.

In a strongly-worded statement, the family accused the two politicians of exerting undue pressure on the National House of Chiefs, a move that they believe undermines the integrity of the chieftaincy institution. The family pointed to recent comments made by Abuba, who claimed that his uncle, Vice President Bawumia, had promised to ensure that a pending judgment in the chieftaincy case would be delayed indefinitely. This, the Royal Jamong Family warned, is a “sad development and a recipe for disaster.”

The family has also documented Mr. Boar’s activities, including a recent trip to Accra with Abuba to meet the Vice President. This has led the family to question the motivations behind these actions and to issue a warning to both Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Boar to stay clear of matters concerning the Bunkpurugu skin.

The statement, delivered by Mr. Mark Musah, a spokesperson for the family, also called on members, supporters, and allies of the Royal Jamong Family to withhold their support for the NPP candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Mr. Musah highlighted the contributions the Jamong Family has made to the NPP, including providing the current Constituency Chairman for Bunkpurugu, expressed disappointment over what they perceive as hostility from Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Boar.

The Bunkpurugu skin, which has been vacant since 1986 due to a military-backed usurpation, remains a contentious issue. The Royal Jamong Family claims that despite promises from the Nayiri of Mamprugu to rectify a historical mistake, the issue has not been resolved, leading to further disputes. The family has contested Abuba’s legitimacy as a chief, and the case has been tied up in the legal system, with a ruling from the Northern Region House of Chiefs declaring Abuba’s enskinment null and void. However, Abuba has appealed the decision, and the matter remains unresolved.

The Jamong Family’s concerns escalated when a final judgment hearing scheduled for August 28, 2024, was postponed indefinitely. The family, who had been eagerly anticipating the hearing, was dismayed to discover that the opposing party did not even appear in court. This development has led to heightened tensions, with the family accusing the National House of Chiefs of not formally communicating the postponement or providing a new date.

Furthermore, the family alleges that war criminals have been brought into Bunkpurugu by Abuba, with the tacit support of the Nayiri Palace, to intimidate and possibly harm those who oppose his claim to the skin. The Royal Jamong Family has called on the Ghana Police Service to take swift action against these alleged criminals and issued a stern warning to them to leave Bunkpurugu immediately.

The Royal Jamong Family concluded their statement with an appeal to the chiefs and leaders of Ghana, including the Asantehene, the Ya-Na, the Yagbon-wura, and others, to stand against political meddling in chieftaincy matters. They also called on the youth of Mamprugu to help restore balance to the Nayiri’s Palace, emphasizing the importance of upholding the 1992 Constitution and maintaining peace in the region.

As the situation remains tense, the Royal Jamong Family has made it clear that they will continue to pursue justice through legal means but warned that their patience is running thin. They have urged all Bimobas to unite against any form of injustice and to speak out against the ongoing issues that threaten the peace and stability of their communities.
