Dr. Toni Aubynn writes to Paul Adom Otchere; demands Retraction and Apology over Galamsey Allegations

One of the renowned figures in Ghana’s mining sector, Dr. Toni Aubynn, has issued a strong rebuttal to allegations made against him by a certain Paul Adom Otchere, the host of Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV. In a letter dated September 17, 2024, Dr. Aubynn addressed claims aired during the September 10 edition of the program, where Mr. Adom Otchere allegedly suggested that Dr. Aubynn advocated for illegal mining, or “galamsey,” during a 2020 broadcast.

Dr. Aubynn vehemently denied these accusations, describing them as “vile lies” and “malicious falsehoods” aimed at tarnishing his hard-earned reputation. He emphasized that throughout his 30-year career in the mining industry, he has consistently stood against illegal mining, contributing significantly to discussions on responsible mining both in Ghana and internationally.

In his response, Dr. Aubynn clarified that at no point has he ever supported any form of illicit mining, further challenging Mr. Otchere to present any evidence to substantiate these claims. He noted that his numerous publications and public statements on the need to combat galamsey are well-documented and accessible for anyone to verify.

Accusing Mr. Otchere and Metro TV of engaging in “paid mudslinging,” Dr. Aubynn hinted that the show’s attacks might be motivated by political interests, as he alleged the broadcaster’s close ties to the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He warned that if the allegations were not retracted and a public apology issued within eight days, he would be forced to consider legal action to defend his reputation.

Dr. Aubynn, in the letter, reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for sustainable solutions to illegal mining and protecting Ghana’s environment and communities from its harmful effects.

The letter was also copied to the Managing Director of Metro TV, Ignite Media Group, and several media houses across the country.

This latest development adds to the ongoing discourse surrounding illegal mining in Ghana, as the country continues to grapple with the environmental and socio-economic consequences of galamsey activities.
