Police Call for Alternative Protest Location
...after Court Prohibits Picketing at Revolution Square
Following a court order prohibiting Democracy Hub from staging a protest at Revolution Square from September 21 to 23, the Ghana Police Service has clarified its stance regarding the proposed demonstration. At a press conference on Thursday, the Director of Public Affairs, Ms. Grace Ansah-Akrofi, explained that the Police’s assessment of the location raised concerns over public order, safety, defense, and health, prompting the legal action.
Ms. Ansah-Akrofi stated that Democracy Hub, the group organizing the protest, had declined to consider alternative locations, insisting on holding the event at Revolution Square, near the Jubilee House. This compelled the Police to seek a court determination on the matter.
She emphasized that the Police had not prevented Democracy Hub from protesting but disagreed on the use of Revolution Square as the venue. “The service has not stopped Democracy Hub from embarking on the planned protest. The only disagreement is their choice of the Revolution Square,” Ms. Ansah-Akrofi said. She reassured that the Police were fully prepared to provide security for the protest from September 21 to 23, once a mutually agreed-upon location is confirmed.
The Police say they have communicated this in writing to the organizers and are hopeful of reaching an agreement soon to ensure Democracy Hub can exercise its right to protest safely and in accordance with the law.
