Govt’s focus on campaign spending fueling rise in labour strikes – Austin Gamey

Labour analyst Austin Gamey has strongly criticized the government for the recent wave of unrest in Ghana’s labour sector. Over the past few weeks, several worker unions, including TUSAAG, FUSAAG, and NCCE, have launched industrial actions in response to the government’s failure to settle outstanding allowances owed to their members.

 

Gamey believes that many workers feel abandoned, as the government seems more focused on its own political interests rather than addressing the concerns of the labour force. With the 2024 General Elections approaching, political parties appear to be prioritizing campaign spending instead of resolving the pressing issues faced by workers.

 

In an interview with Citi News on Sunday, Gamey expressed concern that the situation could escalate if immediate action is not taken, warning of a potential increase in strikes and further instability in the labour space.

 

“The actions of the government give workers the impression that they don’t care about them. Workers see leaders busily campaigning, spending money on fuel, food, and accommodations, while their grievances remain unresolved. Hundreds of people are involved in these campaigns, and it costs a lot. Naturally, workers feel embittered,” Gamey explained.

 

He further cautioned that the frequency of strikes could worsen in the coming weeks unless swift measures are taken. “We just have to find ways and means of dealing with the matter without delay,” he urged.
