Ghana to Mark 2024 National Climate Change and Green Economy Week from October 14-18

The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have announced the 2024 National Climate Change and Green Economy Week, set to take place from October 14 to 18. The event, themed “Greening Education – Changing Mindset, Changing Lifestyle,” is designed to raise awareness about climate change and promote sustainable practices through education.

Key Activities

The week-long event will feature several activities aimed at engaging different sections of society, including the media, students, and the general public. Key highlights of the event include:

• Climate Change & Green Economy Education Day with the Media (October 14): The event will kick off with a special session aimed at educating the media on climate change and its impacts, to encourage informed reporting.
• Street Procession (October 15, 8 a.m.): A public procession will be held from Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Afua Sutherland Park, aimed at increasing public awareness of climate change through community engagement.
• Official Opening Ceremony, National Symposium, and Exhibition (October 16, 9 a.m.): The National Theatre will host the official launch of the event, featuring a symposium and exhibition on climate change solutions, green economy initiatives, and sustainable living.
• Youth Climate Dialogue (October 17, 9 a.m.): A video conference dialogue between high school students in Ghana and Japan will offer a platform for the youth to discuss climate change issues and share ideas for a sustainable future.
• Climate Change Quiz Competition and Unveiling of Drawings (October 18, 9 a.m.): The event will wrap up in Tamale, where primary, junior, and senior high school students will participate in a climate change quiz competition. Additionally, climate change-themed drawings from students will be unveiled.

Promoting Green Education and Sustainable Lifestyles

This year’s theme, “Greening Education – Changing Mindset, Changing Lifestyle,” reflects the growing need to incorporate environmental awareness into education systems and everyday life. The National Climate Change and Green Economy Week will serve as a platform to inspire change by encouraging a shift in mindset and behavior toward more sustainable living.

With climate change posing a significant threat to livelihoods and the environment, the event aims to foster greater collaboration among government bodies, educational institutions, and the general public to combat the challenges ahead.
