Mozambique: AU Condemns Killing of 2 Officials In Post-election Violence

Their deaths have been linked to the election with many alleging it’s aimed at discouraging the demand for transparency in the polls.

The African Union Commission has denounced the killing of two political officials in Mozambique days after they went into the Presidential election and as the country awaits the declaration of the final results.

Elvino Dias, the lawyer of Independent Presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane and Podemos official Paulo Guambe were attacked by gunmen in their car on Saturday.

Their deaths have been linked to the election with many alleging it’s aimed at discouraging the demand for transparency in the polls.

In a statement, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat condemned the incident and charged the security officials in Mozambique to get to the buttom of the incident to bring the perpetrators to book.

“The Chairperson continues to closely monitor the aftermath of the conduct of the General Elections in Mozambique held on October 9 and expresses deep concern of reported cases of post-election violence in particular, the recent killings.”

It also urged the political actors to exercise restraint and peaceful disposition as the country awaits the final declaration of the results.

It added, “In this regard, the Chairperson calls for calm and utmost restraint while all political parties and their supporters allow due process in the overall supreme interest of stability in Mozambique.”
