Labone SHS Celebrates 75th Anniv. and 53rd Speech and Prize-Giving Day
In March 2024, the Headmistress led a week-long Professional Learning Community (PLC) training workshop on the Standards-Based SHS/SHTS and STEM Curriculum Handbook, fostering skill-building for enhanced teaching.
Labone Senior High School, established in 1949, recently celebrated its 75th anniversary and 53rd Speech and Prize-Giving Day under the theme “75 Years of Academic Excellence: Celebrating Our Past and Empowering Our Future through Technology.” This theme acknowledges the school’s long-standing commitment to transforming lives through education.
With a dedicated staff of 190 teachers, 58 non-teaching staff, and a student population of 4,743 (2,329 boys and 2,414 girls), Labone SHS has achieved notable academic success. This year, Master Selorm Dzandu, a student from Labone, was awarded the 2nd Prize in the WAEC International Excellence Awards for the 2023 WASSCE. He received both International and National Distinction Awards, presented in March 2024 in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and in Accra, Ghana, in June 2024.
To enhance teaching and learning, the school management has implemented several initiatives aimed at improving student performance. These include the Students’ Academic Support (SAS) program, which offers an additional hour of tuition in both the morning and afternoon, beyond regular school hours. Regular academic department meetings ensure ongoing review and improvement of educational outcomes.

During her speech, Headmistress Mrs. Rejoice Akua Acorlor emphasized the importance of school discipline and appealed to parents to actively support efforts to reduce absenteeism and lateness among students. She also highlighted the school’s challenges, particularly the need for additional classrooms and furniture, as the student population exceeds current capacity. The school has only two dormitory blocks for boys and girls, which necessitated the conversion of a classroom block into a dormitory for female students.
Mrs. Acorlor expressed gratitude to the President, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and the Ministry of Education for their support. She appealed for additional resources, including:
- Expansion of the assembly hall to accommodate 5,000 people
- Construction of 20-seater toilet facilities each for boys and girls
- New dormitories with 400-bed capacity for boys and girls
- A 40-unit classroom block
- 2,500 mono desks, 100 teacher tables and chairs
- 200 desktop computers
