The President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has instructed the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to expedite the handover of the Kiteezi Landfill to Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies. This is towards improving waste management in Uganda.

The directive, delivered at a high-level meeting at the State House in Entebbe, grants the Ghana-based company the green light to commence decommissioning operations at the landfill, promising a transformative step in the city’s waste management landscape.

The Ugandan leader expressed confidence in the Jospong brand and its Executive Chairman, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, who led a delegation to the meeting. Citing the Group’s pioneering efforts in waste and landfill management, President Museveni highlighted the importance of African self-sufficiency, calling on African nations to unify around shared goals and solutions.

“Africa must be a unified force, building its own capabilities and not relying on others for its development,” he asserted. He further noted that the Kiteezi project represents a model for sustainable solutions that put African expertise to work on Africa’s environmental and developmental challenges.

This directive from Museveni follows delays from the KCCA, reportedly due to legal concerns surrounding the transfer. Earlier this week, Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Ms. Minsa Kabanda, emphasized the urgent need for action, encouraging city officials to engage with local communities and finalize the site’s transfer.

Ms. Kabanda stressed the importance of having Zoomlion’s team operational by March 2025, addressing a critical need for organized waste management in Kampala and beyond.

At the meeting, high-ranking members of the Jospong Group, including Mrs. Florence Larbi, Chief Operating Officer of the Environment and Sanitation (E&S) Cluster, and Mr. Haidar Said, Executive Director of E&S, joined discussions alongside key Ugandan officials, notably acting KCCA Executive Director Frank Rusa and Minister for Kampala, Joseph Kyofatogabye Kabuye.

This collaboration, President Museveni underscored, is about much more than landfill management, it speaks to a vision of African-owned solutions transforming lives across the continent.

Dr. Agyepong described the opportunity as pivotal given Uganda’s drive to modernize waste infrastructure.

He remarked that the project “signals Uganda’s commitment to addressing waste management challenges through strategic partnerships with African enterprises.”

He underscored the Jospong Group’s dedication to creating sustainable systems, highlighting that Uganda’s partnership with an African-led entity will foster a unique model of development, with solutions originating from within the continent.
