Videos of the incident, taken by witnesses, quickly circulated on social media, capturing the terror that gripped the market and the robbers’ coordinated actions.
On Saturday, November 2, the usually bustling Adabraka Market in Accra was rocked by a brazen daylight robbery that unfolded in front of stunned shoppers and residents.
Four masked men, heavily armed, targeted a man in a red Toyota Corolla parked near the market. Witnesses reported that the robbers approached the vehicle with guns drawn, immediately firing several shots into the air to create panic and clear the area.
As the gunfire rang out, shoppers and vendors scrambled for safety, taking cover behind stalls as the robbers forced open the Toyota’s trunk. Inside, they found large sacks of cash, which they quickly transferred to their own getaway vehicle before speeding off. Their departure was marked by more gunshots, keeping bystanders at a distance.
“We deal in gold here, and we heard a loud noise, and we realized it was a sporadic shooting. I can’t even talk; I’m surprised,” an eyewitness shared, recalling the shock. “We hid and locked our gate, but they didn’t come to our end. We heard them saying, ‘Open the boot,’ and saw them carrying bags of money from some of the shops. They spent a few minutes.”
Another eyewitness confirmed the robbery’s swift nature, saying, “There are several gold dealer shops here, so one of the shop owners had bags of money in his Toyota Corolla. As soon as he arrived, the robbers approached the car and took the money away. This is the second time such an incident has happened. The police came in late; by the time they arrived, the robbers had bolted away with the bags of money in their Toyota Highlander. They fired multiple gunshots and spread some money in the air to distract onlookers and scare them away.”
