GhanaDecides: EC holds First Media Briefing on Ongoing General Elections

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has held its first press conference on election day at about 9:45am, to update the public on the progress of the ongoing general elections.

Chairperson of the Commission, Jean Mensa, began by thanking journalists for their presence and urging them to ensure fairness and accuracy in their reportage.

“Information reaching us indicates that voting has commenced peacefully and on time in all regions. Electoral officers are in place, ready to facilitate a transparent and orderly election process,” she stated.

Deputy Chairperson of the EC, Samuel Tetteh, also addressed the media, noting that as of 7:00 a.m., about 99% of polling stations had opened, with nearly all biometric verification devices (BVDs) functioning properly.

“There were a few reports of minor issues with BVDs at some polling stations, but our technicians, who have been deployed across the country, are addressing these challenges promptly,” he added.

Mr. Tetteh further highlighted the presence of police personnel at all polling stations, ensuring a secure and peaceful environment for voters. He also confirmed that agents from the two main political parties, as well as representatives from other candidates, were present at most polling stations.

Additionally, the EC acknowledged the presence of election observers from organizations such as the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), ECOWAS, the European Union, and several local observer groups.

The Electoral Commission expressed its commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and credible election process and promised to provide further updates as the day progresses.
