NDC Hosts Thank You Dinner to Recognize Diaspora Members’ Role in 2024 Electoral Victory

The International Relations Directorate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Thursday, December 12, 2024, organized a “Thank You Get-Together and Dinner” in Accra to appreciate the remarkable contributions of its diaspora members to the party’s landslide victory in the December 7 general elections.

The event, held at the Tesano Royale Hotel, brought together over 300 attendees from around 40 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and China. The atmosphere was one of celebration, gratitude, and a shared commitment to the NDC’s vision for Ghana over the next four years.

Dr. Alex Segbefia, Director of International Relations for the NDC, expressed profound gratitude to the party’s diaspora members, acknowledging their pivotal role in securing the party’s resounding electoral victory.

“Your efforts have been a testament to the unyielding dedication and love for Ghana, regardless of where you reside. Your financial support, advocacy, and relentless commitment to the ideals of the NDC played a pivotal role in our success. There have been differences and difficulties along the way, but we have remained focused and determined toward one particular goal—to reset Ghana and get us back on track.

“According to him, “The diaspora has never been so effective, you have been absolutely fantastic. Your ability to put aside differences and appear in your numbers to secure this victory was clear. Many of you ensured you registered and cast your votes. You took on polling duties, provided food, gave financial support, and attended countless Zoom meetings. The sacrifices you made—your time, money, and efforts—are unprecedented. Let nobody underestimate what you have achieved.

“When it mattered most, you stood tall. From phone calls to on-the-ground support, you delivered. We say, ‘To God be the glory,’ for the diaspora has truly arrived. Whether people like it or not, you matter. Some issues pale into insignificance when you keep your eyes on the ultimate goal. I thank God for the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama and Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang,” he stated.

“So tonight, enjoy yourselves—dance, celebrate, and embrace the joy of this hard-fought victory. Celebrate through the holidays, but remember: when January 7 arrives, the party is over. The real work begins, and it will not be easy. Our country is in an absolute mess, and what we thought was bad will prove to be worse when we dig into the books. But take pride in what you have achieved. Pat yourselves on the back, for the work you’ve done has laid the foundation for us to rebuild Ghana,” Dr. Segbefia further added.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaNewsOnline.com.gh, Deputy NDC Diaspora Coordinator, Maame Efua Sekyi-Aidoo, highlighted the resilience of diaspora members despite financial and logistical hurdles.

“This event is our way of saying thank you to the diaspora members, who not only supported the campaign financially but also took up roles within the party. Their contributions were indispensable,” she said.

Awudu Sannie, a former Deputy Secretary of the UK and Ireland Chapter of the NDC, now in Ghana as part of a diaspora support team, criticized the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for its mismanagement over the past eight years. “Our support for the NDC is not for personal gain but for the development of Ghana—clean water, better roads, schools, and hospitals. That’s what we fight for,” he stated, urging continued sacrifice and dedication from diaspora members to further the party’s mission.

Another attendee, Francis Apuri, a member of the NDC currently based in Sierra Leone, expressed optimism about Ghana’s future under John Mahama and the NDC leadership. “This victory is a sign of hope and economic recovery. We in the diaspora are ready to contribute to national development anytime,” he shared, emphasizing the need for collective effort to achieve sustainable progress.

The event highlighted the vital role of the NDC diaspora community in shaping Ghana’s political landscape and underscored the unity and determination needed to propel the country forward. It concluded with calls for ongoing collaboration and a shared commitment to building a better Ghana for all.
