Mahama Will Restore Responsible Governance and Economic Stability – Haruna Iddrisu
"President Mahama will work faithfully with his honor and with the manifesto pledges of resetting Ghana. He will ensure that governance processes are transparent, inclusive, and aligned with the long-term interests of the country,"
Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tamale South constituency, and a prominent member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has assured Ghanaians that a John Mahama presidency will restore fiscal responsibility, strengthen governance, and prioritize sustainable development. Speaking during an interview on TV3 on Friday, the former Minority Leader emphasized the NDC’s commitment to addressing Ghana’s economic challenges and rebuilding trust in governance processes.
He outlined Mahama’s vision to “reset Ghana” by ensuring responsible use of Parliament, curbing excessive borrowing, and avoiding unsustainable debt levels that have caused economic distress. He also criticized the current Akufo-Addo-led government’s approach to debt management, including what he described as “unacceptable debt exchange programs” and over-reliance on the Bank of Ghana for quantitative easing and money printing to fund government operations.
Mahama’s Track Record of Fiscal Discipline
The former Minority Leader highlighted Mahama’s track record of maintaining fiscal discipline during his previous tenure as president. He noted that between 2015 and 2016, Mahama refrained from over-reliance on Bank of Ghana financing, ensuring a stable and disciplined fiscal policy.
“Even when he was in office, there was zero or minimal financing from the Bank of Ghana. A John Mahama presidency will stay true to this legacy by keeping the central bank independent and preventing it from excessive money printing to support government expenditures,” Iddrisu asserted.
A Commitment to Responsible Governance
Iddrisu also emphasized Mahama’s pledge to use Parliament responsibly and effectively to uphold democratic principles and ensure accountability. He expressed confidence in Mahama’s ability to lead a government that prioritizes the aspirations of Ghanaians, focusing on practical solutions to pressing national issues.
“President Mahama will work faithfully with his honor and with the manifesto pledges of resetting Ghana. He will ensure that governance processes are transparent, inclusive, and aligned with the long-term interests of the country,” Iddrisu stated.
Path to Economic Recovery
The NDC’s approach to economic recovery, as outlined by Iddrisu, involves avoiding unsustainable debt accumulation, prioritizing investments that drive growth, and fostering financial discipline. Mahama’s presidency, he said, would mark a departure from the current economic policies that have left the country heavily indebted and reliant on external interventions.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu’s remarks underscore the NDC and John Dramani Mahama’s’s vision for a more responsible, disciplined, and transparent government. As the country prepares for the swearing-in of the new president-elect, Haruna Iddrisu has urged Ghanaians to reflect on Mahama’s track record and the need for policies that prioritize long-term stability over short-term gains.
