Fresh details have emerged regarding the events that led to the chaos in Ejura in the Ashanti Region, on Saturday, January 11, 2025. The unrest has resulted in the complete destruction of the Ejura Police Station and its accompanying officers’ quarters.

The crisis began following the death of a young Muslim Zongo man in police custody on Friday, January 10, 2025. He had been arrested for allegedly purchasing a stolen phone, while the person who reportedly sold the phone to him remained at large. Eyewitnesses claim the suspect was found dead in his cell under unclear circumstances.

Compounding the community’s anger, the police reportedly failed to notify the deceased’s Muslim family of his death, instead transporting his body to the Mampong morgue without their consent. The family, upon visiting the station to inquire about the case, learned of his death, sparking widespread outrage.

In a swift and violent reaction, enraged Zongo residents took to the streets, stormed the police station, and set it ablaze. The officers’ quarters were also burned, and all suspects in custody were reportedly freed during the chaos.

Military personnel were deployed to the area to restore order, but tensions remain high as residents demand accountability and justice for the young man’s death.

Efforts by GhanaNewsOnline to contact the Ejura Police Command for an official statement have so far been unsuccessful. Meanwhile, community and opinion leaders are appealing for calm as investigations into the incident commence.
