The Ghana Police Service has been forced to eat a humble pie as they agree to provide men to secure the scheduled August 4, 2021 demonstration by the #FixTheConutry movement.

The group had tried to stage their protest against corruption and systemic rot in Ghana on May 9, 2021, but the GPS had vehemently been opposed to the move. The Police Service had gone to court to attempt to seek a perpetual injunction against the youth group.

However, all attempts by the Police in both the High Court and Supreme Court failed.

The Police, therefore, had no choice but to back down on its illegal suppression of the rights of the group to protest. The group and the Police Service on Monday, July 19, 2021, finally reached an understanding on the August 4 protest.

Afterwards, the Police Service issued a statement saying: “The police are poised to provide the necessary security for the safety of the planned procession of members of the #FixTheCountry movement on Wednesday 4th August 2021.”

COVID-19 protocols they’ve put in place. “The police and convenors will continue to deliberate,” the statement added.

An Accra High Court recently dismissed an application from the police restraining the group from embarking on the demonstration in May 2021.

The court presided by Justice Ruby Aryeetey on Friday [June 25, 2021] ruled that the police application was moot

Meanwhile, one of the convenors, Brownson Adatsi, assured that the protest will be organized in accordance with the law.

“We are assuring Ghanaians that we are safe because we live in a democratic nation and are within the remits of the law. So nothing bad will happen to the conveners,” he said.
