The Director of Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Prof. Kwesi Aning, has reportedly issued a doomsday warning that more military coups are set to be launched in Africa, following the recent military takeover in Guinea.

According to Accra-based Joy News, Prof Kwesi Aning made the ominous prediction on its PM Express show on Monday.

“What has happened in Guinea is painful. It is something that could have been prevented. It is unnecessary, however not surprising that it has taken place. What we are witnessing is a failure of leadership across our continent,” Prof. Aning said.

Prof. Aning did not mention candidate countries for the anticipated coup d’états, but this should send worrying signals to countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Gambia, Ivory Coast and several others where growing socio-economic inequalities and endemic corruption of the political class has set off growing angry youth movements that military adventurers could use as a catalyst to justify a takeover.

“If we don’t step in and correct the whip and ensure that member states indeed comply with what they have signed on to, by December, you and I would be having this conversation with respect to two more coup d’etats,” Prof. Aning warned.

Already, within just one year, West Africa has witnessed three coups-two successive ones in Mali, a failed attempt in Niger and the successful one in Guinea.

On Sunday, September 5, a Guinean military officer, Mamady Doumbouya announced that the country’s constitution has been revoked following a coup.

After seizing the airwaves, the mutinous soldiers vowed to restore democracy.

Various news outlets and amateur videos from Guineans show a jubilant citizenry who were happy that the government of the 83-year-old Alpha Conde was ousted by the gun.

According to the Guinea coup plotters, they consider their action as justice rendered to the people of Guinea because Conde and his clique have reportedly been oppressing the citizens and had plunged the country into a den of corruption
