Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Consumer Protection (CPA), Kofi Kapito, is advocating that all must pay up their utility bills to enable service providers to function effectively and efficiently.
He said, not even the president of the republic should be exempted from paying water and electricity bills.
That, for him, is the standard practice in other jurisdictions.
At a stakeholder engagement organised by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) on tariff adjustment proposals tabled by service providers, Kofi Capito raised concerns about the technical and commercial losses some of the service providers reported.
For him, the failure on the part of Ghanaians to pay their utility bill coupled with the service provider’s inability to recover those monies, is a crippling factor for the efficiency of the service delivery.
He expressed worry how some state agencies and individuals are reluctant to pay their utility bills.
Kofi Kapito was particularly concerned about the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), which has proposed 148% tariff increment from 2022 to 2027, part of which was due to technical and commercial losses incurred.
