Ghana is not threatened by ‘dumsor’ – Egyapa Mercer

Deputy Minister of Energy, Andrews Egyapa Mercer has said that Ghana is currently not threatened by erratic power cuts christened ‘dumsor”.

In his view, the power data available indicates that the country is not returning to the days of power rationing.

“We are not threatened by dumsor at all,” he said on the Good Evening Ghana show.

He added “If you look at the data we are not threatened by dumsor.”

“We are not worried at all. To the extent that we operate equipment, you cannot predict. There are planned outages and unplanned outages.

“Planned outages I expect the ECG and the GRIDCO…to announce and people planed for, the Sekondi lawmaker said.

Former Minister of Power Dr Kwabena Donkor had earlier asked the government to bring on stream additional power supply units to boost the country’s total capacity in order to meet the increasing demand for power.

The Pru East lawmaker said “This country is most likely to face load-shedding in the next two years if urgent steps are not taken from this moment to increase our power generation.

“Power consumption demand increases between 7% and 15% every year, and it takes a minimum of three years to bring on stream a new thermal plant. We seem to be sleepwalking into a situation of possible power outages as a result of supply limitation,” he said.
