“I have been watching the Black Stars. I always want to see them [play] and learn from them. I am so young at the moment and I’m focusing on myself, working hard. Whether it is Spain or Ghana [I don’t know yet]. I want to be the best and when the time comes, I will [make the decision],”

Athletic Bilbao winger, Nico Williams, has stated that he wants some time off to develop his game before choosing to play for the senior national team of Ghana or Spain.

The 19-year-old has been playing for Spain’s youth teams, but the recent switch of nationality from his brother, Iñaki, has raised hopes of Ghanaians that Nico will do the same,  but in an interview with TV3 monitored by NorvanReports, he stated that he has not made that decision yet.

Ghana witnessed a similar nationality switch brouhaha including brothers Kevin Prince Boateng and Jerome Boateng where the former on loan with Portsmouth then, opted against a possible future with the German national team, favouring Ghana instead.

A lot of people thought his brother would do same but he decided to play for Germany instead.

A change in FIFA statutes in 2005 allowed players who had represented one country at junior level to play for another country if they are entitled to dual nationality..

Nico Williams made his debut for Athletic Bilbao in April, 2021 and is slowly establishing himself as a key player for the team.
