President of the Small Scale Miners Association, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, has disclosed that drones that the Akufo-Addo government bought in 2017 to fight illegal mining, also known as galamsey, have disappeared into thin air.

He made this revelation in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday.

“Call and ask where the drones are; you just called them,” he challenged show host Omanhene Kwabena Asante.

A whopping US$2million had been spent on those drones, something that incurred a massive backlash at the government’s dubious expenditures.

However, Amewu had justified the purchase arguing that the drones had special features that would greatly boost the anti-galamsey efforts.

“These drones are non-visible when they are up in the air. They are sound-free and they can zoom down to about five meters even at a height of about 3, 000 kilometres. It can go as far as about 27, 000 feet above sea level. It can do a lot of things and it’s very complex,” Peter Amewu had said in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM.
